Would you wear pajamas to the prom?
There has been a lot of hullabaloo in the press lately about inappropriate prom dresses and wearing pajamas to the prom as an alternative. This topic has popped up in Teen Vogue, the Wall Street Journal, the Huffington Post, and gawker.com. So, I thought that I would put in my two cents.
First, I have absolutely nothing against prom dresses. In fact, 20+ years ago I wore one myself. It was a black Gunne Sax dress by Jessica McClintock. That black prom dress had been passed around quite a bit in my family. My two older sisters wore it to college formals that year. We also had another young woman who lived with our family who also wore it to a college formal. We definitely got our moneys worth out of that prom dress.
So fast forward to 2012... why have prom dresses become so controversial? Some school districts throughout the country have started warning students about which dresses are appropriate for the prom and which are inappropriate. In a nutshell, schools are cracking down on tight, skimpy, revealing dresses.
Somehow out of all of this controversy, someone decided that teenage girls should just wear pajamas to the prom. Since we sell pajamas for a living, obviously we are biased when we say that this is a great idea. But seriously, we have a few suggestions if you decide to go to the prom in your pjs this year.
If you decide to go in a regular prom dress, that is great too. Just remember, you are only a kid once. You don't need to grow up too fast. You have your whole life to be an adult, but only a few precious years to be a teenager. Enjoy them.
(Before you head to the prom, don't forget to watch some of my favorite eighties prom movies – Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful.)
Whatever you decide to wear, have a wonderful prom night. Be safe and make wise choices.
